Creating a Milestone Anniversary Celebration When Bora Bora is Postponed to 2021

As I shared on Instagram, my husband and I made the difficult decision to postpone our long-awaited ‘wanderlist’ trip to French Polynesia for our 20th wedding anniversary. We had plans to arrive today to enjoy the beauty of Moorea and Bora Bora, experience those aqua waters in overwater bungalows for the first time as we toasted our anniversary. As you can probably relate, the delayed gratification is not easy, especially when you are looking forward to the change of pace, ease of stress, a new adventure, and reconnecting with nature, yourself, or someone you love.

Early in the pandemic, when I missed out on a trip to Italy, I called it ‘delayed grativacation’. At that point, I could not have imagined we would be at home every day and every night for seven long months and it’s still mind-blowing when I think about it. I took 5 international trips in 2019 so all this home time would not have seemed possible. Are you feeling it too? Like so many of you-clients, friends, and blog readers- who have had to postpone your travel plans, we feel for you and have recently done the same.

As I shared on Instagram, my husband and I made the difficult decision to postpone our long-awaited ‘wanderlist’ trip to French Polynesia for our 20th wedding anniversary. As you can probably relate, the delayed gratification is not easy, especially when you are looking forward to the change of pace, ease of stress, a new adventure, and reconnecting with nature, yourself, or someone you love.

But for now, it feels safer to postpone, so we pivot. We feel the disappointment and move those plans further back on our ‘wanderlist’ calendar. Bora Bora will have to wait until July 2021. And then we make some new plans. For us, it needed to be something meaningful, something worthy of our 20th celebration and it needed to feel safe in these COVID times. By sheer coincidence, and a webinar I joined with preferred travel partners, the perfect destination fell right into place. The answer, it seems, was hanging on the wall in my husband’s home office all along.

My dress for our anniversary dinner is more coral than red, but Scott and I will lounging on this very balcony, and enjoying a stay at this residential-style boutique hotel in the Napa Valley later this week. Auberge Du Soleil, “Inspired by the south of France. Infused with California soul'“ will be perfect for our celebration. With a bit of planning and creativity, we have another ‘wanderlist’ stay on the horizon for this milestone and I hope you do for yours.

Stay safe and cheers! Heather

Summer Garden Tour: Beautiful Gardens Around the World

I recently saw an article from Virtuoso on beautiful gardens around the world. Did you catch it on our Curated Travel Facebook page? It reminded me of one of the favorite gardens that I visited at Lake Como in 2018. Villa Balbiano is a magnificent palazzo built in the 16th century, now part of the Heritage Collection, and is described as “The Italian Opulence on Lake Como”.

I recently saw an article from Virtuoso on beautiful gardens around the world. Did you catch it on our Curated Travel Facebook page? It reminded me of one of my personal favorite gardens that I visited at Lake Como in 2018. Villa Balbiano is a magnificent palazzo built in the 16th century, now part of the Heritage Collection, and is described as “The Italian Opulence on Lake Como”.

I wrote a blog post about my memorable visit to Villa Balbiano on Lake Como. It was early April and the gardens were just starting to wake up. Check out the video for an aerial perspective. The views of the gardens and palazzo are stunning!

My Pinterest board, Gardens Around the World, houses ethereal images of English, Italian, French and wine country gardens for inspiration. There is something calming and restorative about gazing at the beauty of nature in these spectacular gardens, especially in times like these. I hope you enjoy this mini virtual garden tour today.

As a travel advisor who has been homebound for the last 5 months, it’s more challenging to come up with travel inspiration for the blog. I hope this glimpse of beauty around the world brings you a bit of sunshine today.

Thank you for reading and be well. Heather

Real Time Travel: Croatia is Re-Opening for Tourists!

Last fall, during our Azamara Mediterranean Cruise of the Dalmatian and Amalfi Coasts, we visited Croatia for the first time. Scott and I spent a day wandering the charming alleys of old town Sibenik, increasingly popular as home to two UNESCO heritage sights as well as a filming location for Game of Thrones. With a rich cultural history, golden sand beaches flanking the cerulean blue Adriatic, a visit to Sibenik entices you to explore even more of Croatia.

It’s exciting to note that Croatia is one of the first European countries to open up to tourists.

A Boulder Adventure: The Baths on the Island of Virgin Gorda

If you find yourself on the island of Virgin Gorda a trip to the Baths in Devil’s Bay is a must! During our Azamara Caribbean Cruise last November we booked an afternoon to explore these gigantic boulders, created by volcanic activity, and the tranquil aqua blue grottos they created.

From the parking lot at the top of the mountain, we chose the route on the left to hike the meandering path, filled with scenic views, down to the beach. After we refreshed ourselves with swimming in the aqua blue seas, Mr. CT and I followed the clearly marked trail through the boulders and peaceful grottos. Wooden stairs and rope handrails are used here and there and, in some spots, we stretched ourselves up and over boulders. Though physically demanding over the boulders, splashing through pools was pure refreshment. This natural marvel is exhilarating adventure travel at its finest and highly recommended.

Pro Tips for the Baths:

  • Bring/wear water shoes or sandals for the hike and bath path.

  • Pack light since you will be carrying your things with you through the bath path.

  • When you arrive at the parking lot at the top of the hill, take the path to the left which will lead you down the gentler, meandering path to the beach. After a dip, gather your belongings and watch the arrows to follow the bath path to the other side. It’s a one way path and you will end at another beach with snorkeling, beverages and food available for purchase. The hike back to the top from this beach to the parking lot is more intense but much shorter.

How to Create Your Favorite Destination Scent at Home

One of my favorite activities while traveling is to pop into a fragrance shop or stand. It’s intriguing to savor the scents of a local region and I often learn more about the history and culture of the place from the vendors than from a museum next door. Over and over I am attracted to scents of the Mediterranean with splashes of citrus, lavender, neroli, bergamot, rosemary, eucalyptus, peony, and more. Since travel remains on the horizon for most of us this summer, I think it’s lovely to bring the fragrances of our favorite destinations home.

Benefits of using essential oils in a diffuser:

  1. Create a relaxing environment

  2. Anxiety reduction

  3. Improved sleep

  4. Improved well-being

  5. Signature fragrance can be transportive to a favorite destination

  6. No fire hazard (as in candles)

To create your signature fragrance for the home:

*Fractionalized coconut oil (liquid) here

*Organic Essential Oils here (My favorite - neroli here)

*Small Funnel

*Glass jars for diffusing and diffuser sticks (I’ve collected diffusers over the years to reuse)

I create my signature fragrance by adding a 1/2 cup of liquid coconut oil to a lidded glass jar. I add 15 drops of my preferred essential oil base to start building the fragrance. I then add additional fragrance oils, drop by drop, to create the signature blend. Along the way, sniff and sniff, adding drops until you have your perfected your signature scent. When your desired result is achieved, use the funnel to slowly pour small amounts of your blend into the diffuser jars. Add diffuser sticks if you like. Save any unused blend in the lidded jar to refresh diffusers on a weekly basis.

My current favorite scents are neroli, lemon, sweet orange, bergamot, lavender, and vetiver.

If you want to perfect your fragrance building process learn more The Art of Pairing.

On a side note, it’s not easy to feel inspired as a travel advisor/ blogger during a pandemic and I’m sorry for my lack of regular posting on the blog. I started several posts this month but I must confess to some writer’s ‘roadblock’. How apropos! Despite that, I hope you are staying healthy and faring well during these challenging times. Message me on Instagram or drop me a comment below and let’s keep in touch. Travel will begin again and it is sure to be more celebratory and meaningful than ever.

Ciao!!

Heather
