Getaway to Positano on the Spectacular Amalfi Coast of Italy
Positano possesses a kind of magic that is difficult to put into words. It’s a kaleidoscope of shimmering light, pastel hues, vibrant bougainvillea, and the winding, terraced streets with pastel villas clinging to the mountainside. Boldly colored umbrellas bounce off the chameleon blue hues of the sea. At sunset, a rosy glow falls over the glassy sea and twinkling lights spark the views. Day or night, Positano is a place of pure magic.

The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast has been on my travel bucket list for many years. Despite several visits to Italy, Scott and I had never made it this far south until July. It was definitely worth the wait! The rumored magic of the Amalfi Coast is all true.
Following a 3 1/2 hour drive, three flights and 30+ hours of travel, we arrived in Naples. Thankfully, our driver, Davide of Dreaming Amalfi Coast, was there to greet us. He ushered us into his luxury vehicle and entertained us with stories of Amalfi Coast and Italian life. Charming Davide stopped for us to take in some views of Sorrento and the entire Amalfi Coast, and offered us some limoncello ice from a roadside stand.
With travel fatigue and jet lag setting in, having comfortable lodging pre-booked is always important to us. As it turns out, the Alcione Residence was the perfect choice for our four-night stay. The intimate boutique hotel of 11 suites is charming and well-appointed with panoramic views of Positano from each balcony. The staff, Katia and Valentina, were incredibly kind and helpful. The location is right on Via Cristoforo Columbo and just two doors away from the famed Le Sirenuse Hotel. Boutiques and cafes are sprinkled along the street, and the bougainvillea covered path to the shopping streets and beach is nearby.
Our suite was beautifully appointed with authentic Italian furnishings, luxurious linens, and brightly colored hand-painted tiles. From wrought iron details to gilded mirrors, we were very pleased with our spotless and cheery suite.
The view from our terrace was captivating.
We stumbled across the street from the hotel on that first weary night. We didn't have to walk up or down the steep slope but simply across the street. We enjoyed the dishes and view so well at Ristorante L'Ancora that we ate here twice and enjoyed a nightcap on another evening.
At Residence Alcione a breakfast tray, with continental breakfast and more items of our choice, was delivered to our room each day for dining on the terrace.
Be prepared to walk and climb stairs in Positano. Comfortable shoes are a must! The streets are steep and winding.
There are many options of things to do in Positano--take in the views, enjoy a delicious meal at a café, shop the boutiques, tour Chiesa di Santa Maria, or catch a ferry or private boat to a number of destinations. If you are in the mood for water sports, they have it all at the beach. If you simply want to chill, you can take a break at a beachfront café. Steps away you can catch some sun or a swim at Spiaggia Grande beach or the smaller Spiaggia del Fornillo beach around the bend.
This is the view of the ornate dome of Chiesa di Santa Maria from the terrace of the famed hotel Le Sirenuse. This spot was a couple of doors down from our hotel and a luxurious spot to grab lunch or a glass of rose'.
Boutiques are plentiful, especially close to the beach, where cruise ships unload passengers anxious to collect souvenirs of Positano. The jewel encrusted sandals are very popular and one of my favorite souvenirs to bring home.
Scott and I beat the heat, and the crowds, by walking up Via Cristoforo Colombo one afternoon. We found a petite sidewalk cafe' to enjoy another fresh caprese salad.
I happened upon the enticing Profumi di Positano. After sampling a number of fragrances, I eventually selected Aova Avrea, a fragrance with the most significant lemon/limone notes, according to the charming owner who helped me. The Barba family started making their quality olive-oil based soaps in 1922 and launched their perfumes in 1965. The brand is now led by the fourth generation of the Barba family. I always enjoy taking home a fragrance, candle or soap when I travel. Smelling it later takes me back to that place in time.
The view from Marincanto. This is one of my favorite images, and hotel views, from our time in Positano.
Surely either terrace would work nicely for some sun and lounging. Don't you think?
If you've watched the first season of Giada in Italy, on the Food Network, you may recognize this area. The cooking show, featuring chef Giada De Laurentiis, was filmed just a short walk up from our hotel at Torre Sponda. Once we booked our trip to Positano, I rewatched several episodes of Giada's cooking show, just drooling over the scenery and the recipes, dreaming of our upcoming visit.

The Fascinating Thing About Travel
The fascinating thing about long distance travel is how you can pack a bag, cue up in line, enter a veritable cylinder for a ride in the sky and hours later the door opens to an entirely different world. The language, the architecture, the smells, even the pace of life around you. It is a bit surreal, especially after a long flight -- or two or three -- and being awake 30+ hours, but I always love that moment. It feels like re-entry to the world or time travel, and I'm hooked on the experience. Long distance travel is grueling, but the reward is definitely worth it.

On our last night in Paris Scott and I took a boat ride on the Seine, just as we did on our visit together back in 2003. Paris was crystal clear and the views of the city were amazing from the vantage point of the river. After sundown, we ended up at a picturesque café in Saint Germaine for a caprese salad and a carafe of rosé. We enjoyed lively conversation with new friends from Argentina, Switzerland, and the US under the moonlight, and didn't even think about the time until midnight. Time escaped us again! Thankfully we had already packed for our trip home the next day since we had to be up at 3:00 am to catch the shuttle to Charles de Galle and enter that cylinder in the sky.
We made the trip home safely, following 29 hours of travel, and are digging out from mountains of laundry, piles of mail and all the usual. It feels good to be home and sleeping in our own bed again. That's the fascinating thing about travel... it all feels a bit surreal. I'm still dreaming of the beautiful places we visited on this trip, and I'm looking forward to sharing more on Italy and Paris. Despite all the beauty, and a desire to return as soon as possible, we are again reminded that there is no place like home.
What have you been up to this summer?
Postcard from Paris!
Postcard from Paris
The early morning light of Paris is streaming in through the luxurious linen curtains, as I sit here at the marble-topped table with my laptop. The chandelier above me is sparkling. My husband is still slumbering in the next room and I have Carli Bruni softly crooning in french on Spotify.
I want to remember moments like this forever.
Life in Paris is very sweet.
I just noticed the patisserie across the street is already open. :) We had steaming café crèmes with a pain au chocolat croissant yesterday that blew our minds. There are no croissants in the world like France.
Is it something in the water?
Yesterday I awoke to texts checking to see if we were okay after the horrific attack in Nice at the Bastille Day celebration. We were just fine, but I had felt nervous about Bastille Day celebrations since we booked this trip to Europe back in November after the terror attacks in Paris.
I shared my thoughts yesterday morning on Instagram:
Another beautiful day dawns in Paris...We are excited to be celebrating retirement and my birthday today in this magnificent city, yet we are deeply saddened over the news from Nice and the losses they have suffered. We are safe and sound in this charming apartment Thank you for the texts, emails and comments checking in on us. 💕Scott and I were in the final stages of booking this trip to Europe when the terror attacks happened in Paris. I'll admit it, I've been nervous about our return to Paris. The images of terror don't fade easily from mind. When people are gunned down while dining at a cafe, enjoying a concert or watching fireworks, there is no sense to it...I saw military weapons and heard sirens at the airport yesterday. I wanted to get out of the "soft target" zone asap. Scott went out in the crowds for fireworks for Bastille Day late last night, but I did not. We will be out enjoying this summer day in one of our favorite places. 💐☀️ Terror and tragedy can happen anywhere, anytime. We want to be cautious, be we cannot let fear dictate our lives. We will continue to enjoy the adventure of travel and not let the dark side steal our joy. 💖✈️🌎 #france#paris#travel#travelgram#instagram#nicefrance#traveltales#wanderlust#traveling
And with that, we continue to enjoy the adventure of travel, this lovely apartment, and our last few days in Paris. I'm overwhelmed by the kind birthday wishes I received yesterday. Merci!! 55 is off to a fabulous start!
Here's to embracing the joy of today!

Curated Hotel: The Senza Napa for a Jazzy Weekend in Napa Valley
I was recently invited to attend Brian Culbertson’s Jazz Getaway in Napa Valley so naturally Scott and I decided to make a quick weekend out of it. Wine country is beautiful every season, yet this weekend was simply spectacular. The temperature was in the high 70’s with a fresh coastal breeze. Here I am, thoroughly enjoying the pre-show with a glass of Napa Valley vino.
Jazzy Weekend in Wine Country
I was recently invited to attend Brian Culbertson's Jazz Getaway in Napa Valley so naturally Scott and I decided to make a quick weekend out of it. Wine country is beautiful every season, yet this weekend was simply spectacular. The temperature was in the high 70's with a fresh coastal breeze. Here I am, thoroughly enjoying the pre-show with a glass of Napa Valley vino.
Our weekend getaway started on Saturday with a late lunch in Yountville at a longtime favorite for french fare, Bistro Jeanty of chef Philippe Jeanty fame. We relaxed over fresh salads and cheese plates for the first time in what seemed like weeks. It felt like a mini-getaway to Provence.
Our next stop was to check into our hotel for the night, the recently renovated Hotel Senza. We had stayed here years ago when it was the La Residence. The spacious suites have been freshened up and modernized beautifully. The lush grounds and pool area are filled with a massive sculpture collection. Lounging areas are sprinkled throughout the gardens near the grapevines.
Hotel Senza possesses a rustic luxe vibe and is in the perfect location to explore wine country. It is located on the NorthWest corner of Napa just off Highway 29 on Howard Lane. From there it's an easy jaunt north to Yountville, Saint Helena or Calistoga. If you head west on Highway 12 it will take you to the picturesque Sonoma Valley.
After checking into the hotel and enjoying the wine/cheese reception presented by a local winery, we headed out for dinner on the terrace at Basalt to sample the seasonal California cuisine. Tapas and a cocktail were the perfect combination for a warm, spring evening on the river. The café lights added just the right romantic touch to this lovely spot.
Following a dreamy sleep, in a comfy bed with luxurious linens, and a substantial continental breakfast at Hotel Senza, we lounged on the patio, near the vineyards, to finish our espresso. By 10:00 am it was time to head out to the parking area at Napa College to catch the shuttle to the Jazz Getaway.
Brian Culbertson initiated the Jazz Getaway in 2012. The 5 day festival is held at several local venues, including Jamieson Vineyard Ranch, on Highway 12, at the gateway to the Napa Valley. With shuttle service, food trucks, wine and water for sale and ample shade areas, it seems the festival planners thought of every detail.
We arrived shortly after the doors opened on Sunday to beat the rush. Food trucks and wine stands were ready and waiting. After much consideration, we chose the Vera Pizza Napoletana pizza and a splash of Rose'. There were many delicious dining options at the Jazz Getaway.
Show Time!!
The show started with the vibrant energy of Vincent Ingala.
Next onstage was Mr. Brian Culbertson himself. Love his splashy green sequin jacket! Brian started this event back in 2012. From the first year, this event has featured a fantastic roundup of wine country concerts and events. Brian plays each day of the 5 days of the Jazz Getaway with unique artists joining him at each venue. Onstage here he is joined by Eric Darius.
The Temptations brought back a classic vibe. The show ended with Michael McDonald, one of my longtime favorites. I've seen Michael McDonald in concert several times over the years and I always enjoy his soulful style.
Festival Fashion
I always enjoy observing fashion at an event like this. Short flowy dresses, maxi skirts, palazzo pants, lace shorts, and rompers were very popular. Hats were everywhere, stylish and so practical for sun protection.
I was honored to be invited to attend the Jazz Getaway this year. If you are a fan of music, jazz, wine country and/or wine, this is a unique experience you will most definitely enjoy. Tickets for many of the events sold out this year, so shop early.
5 Favorite Things to Do in Napa Valley

Go wine tasting with a view!
Many wineries in Napa Valley have sunny terraces or patios with views. The infinity pool at Signorello, and Domaine Carneros (like a french château), are two of my favorite spots. I want to try the modern vistas at Cade on our next visit. For sips and bites, you simply can't beat the deck at the luxurious Auberge Du Soleil (you won't want to leave--EVER!).
Enjoy a concert in the vineyard or in a wine cave.
Napa Valley has a vibrant music scene and experiencing music, while sampling fine food and wines, creates a unique multi-sensory experience. One of the most exciting events of the season is the upcoming Brian Culbertson's 5th Annual Jazz Getaway from June 8-12. There are still tickets available for this gold-standard jazz event. Scott and I will be attending on Sunday. The lineup includes: Michael McDonald, Fourplay, Gerald Albright, Jonathan Butler, Mint Condition, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun, Larry Graham & Graham Central Station, Eric Darius, Average White Band, Stanley Jordan, Michael Lington, Althea René, Marqueal Jordan, Vincent Ingala, Morgan James, Cecil Ramirez, comedian Jammin' Jay Lamont, DJ's Rick & Russ w/CJ Flash, plus The Temptations featuring the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway Horn Section. I am so excited to be attending this fantastic event.
Enjoy a spa experience at your wine country resort.
After a day of tasting and meandering around the valley, it is wonderful to come back to your resort for a swim and time by the pool. A massage or facial is even better to get you in the relaxed vacation mode. These resorts, with spas, are highly recommended and I have visited each of them over the years.
Pick up a picnic lunch.
Stop by Oxbow Market in Napa, or Oakville Grocery in Yountville, and pick up delicious bites and wines to create the perfect picnic among the vines. Be sure to pack a picnic blanket (I always have one in the trunk), or pick up a beautiful blanket as a souvenir at one of the many shopping spots in the valley, like St. Helena, Calistoga or Yountville.
Drive the Loop!
From Napa head north on the iconic Silverado Trail towards Calistoga. You spot beautiful vistas and quintessential wineries at every turn. Stop in Calistoga or head south through St. Helena, Rutherford, Yountville on Highway 29. The perfect scenic loop!
A Visit to Punta Sur: Colors of the Caribbean
On our recent trip to Isla Mujeres the concierge on the yacht, Alexander, told us we must visit Punta Sur, “It’s magical”. We rented a golf cart on day two and made it a point to put this picturesque spot on our itinerary.

From high atop the rocky cliffs, on the southern point of the island, the sea views are spectacular.
One of our favorite elements of travel is discovering new, unexpected places that we revel in. Here is Scott, enjoying the natural beauty and the tropical breezes of Punta Sur.
Pathways wind through an outdoor art installation with metal sculptures.
The chameleon colors of the sea change each moment with layers of clouds and sun.
Possibly the best seat on the island. This café is perfectly placed for enjoying the views of Punta Sur.

More on our trip to beautiful Isla Mujeres.
If you are fortunate enough to travel to Isla Mujeres you will definitely want to make the short trip to Punta Sur. Islanders rave about the sunrise views, though we couldn't drag ourselves out of bed that early on vacation. Midday is just fine as you can see! If you rent a golf cart consider renting for 24 hours so that you have the option of touring the island early morning or at night.
